How to secure loads correctly when moving cargo with electric forklifts(figure1)

Electric forklifts are widely used in modern warehouses, manufacturing workshops and logistics distribution centers for low-noise, zero-emission cargo handling operations. Unstandardized load securing is one of the top causes of on-site operation accidents, which may lead to cargo damage, personnel injury and unnecessary equipment wear. Following the scientific, standardized load securing procedures can effectively eliminate most hidden safety risks during cargo moving.

Pre-operation Load Assessment

Before picking up any cargo, operators need to conduct a full visual check of the load status first. Confirm the total weight of the load does not exceed the rated load capacity marked on the nameplate of the electric forklift, and do not estimate the weight of heavy loads by personal experience casually. Check the outer packaging or structure of the cargo to make sure there is no crack, damage or loose part that may cause collapse during moving. Confirm the center of gravity of the whole load is located in the middle area, and avoid placing heavy, high-density items on the top of the stack which will raise the overall center of gravity and reduce the stability of the forklift.

Correct Load Placement on Fork Blades

Adjust the distance between two fork blades to match the support points on the bottom of the load, to ensure the weight of the cargo is evenly distributed on two blades. Insert the full length of fork blades under the pallet or the bottom of the load, do not use only a small part of the blades to bear the full weight of the whole cargo. After picking up the load, tilt the mast backward properly, to make the load lean against the backrest of the forklift firmly, which can prevent the load from sliding forward during sudden braking. Lower the load to 10 to 15 centimeters above the ground before starting to drive, never keep the load at high position when traveling with the electric forklift.

Additional Securing Measures for Special Scenarios

For irregular shaped loads that cannot be placed stably on standard pallets, place non-slip mats between the fork blades and the contact surface of the cargo first, and use qualified industrial strapping bands to fix the load on the backrest if necessary. For scattered small parts that are easy to fall off, put them into sealed standard storage bins first before stacking, do not pile up scattered items directly on the fork blades. For over-length loads that extend beyond two sides of the forklift, add obvious warning marks on the extended parts, and remind surrounding staff to keep a safe distance during moving.

In-transit and Post-operation Confirmation

During the traveling process, avoid sharp acceleration, sudden braking and sharp turning, and slow down in advance when passing through aisle intersections or uneven road surfaces. If you notice the load shows signs of shifting during traveling, drive the forklift to a flat, open area with no passing staff nearby, then stop and re-adjust the load securing status. Do not try to push or reposition the unsteady load with hands when the forklift is still moving. After you deliver the cargo to the target position, lower the load to the platform ground steadily before pulling out the fork blades. Regular targeted training for operators on above load securing rules can further standardize daily operation behaviors, and maintain a stable safe production environment for the whole handling site.
